Understanding ‘compassionate excellence’ in practice: A workshop series from the Oxford Healthcare Values Partnership and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation

OHVP and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are running a new series of compassion workshops with the Gerontology department from the June to September, led by Dr Claire Pulford, (Consultant Physician Gerontology and Director of Medical Education) and Professor Joshua Hordern (Oxford University Healthcare Values partnership, Associate Professor of Christian Ethics).

The aim of the workshops is to allow clinical and non-clinical staff the space to reflect on what compassion means in their contexts – and the opportunity to identify changes which could be made to strengthen the department’s policy and practice around compassion. The workshops are open to a range of clinical and non-clinical staff at all levels (including both senior and newly-qualified nurses, doctors and allied health professionals), and other managerial and support staff as appropriate.

Workshop objectives

Specifically the workshop will enhance the capacity of participants to:

  • Understand the way that their compassion is shaped and supported by their own stories, beliefs and values.

  • Interpret the significance of colleagues’ and patients' stories, beliefs and values for the practice of compassion.

  • Understand the interrelation of compassion with issues of institutional, societal and personal responsibility in order to support collaborative relationships.

  • Appreciate the diverse meanings of ‘compassion’ in a plural society where health, illness and suffering are diversely understood both at the level of community and individual.

  • Think creatively about how to put these capacities into practice to improve care and so deliver compassionate excellence in an ongoing way.
